Diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 4, Tyler was initially bullied at school due to his subsequent hair loss. To help himself cope through this difficult time, the then seven-year-old picked up a violin and participated in a free after-school program. "Once he started that class, it was like sunshine," his mother said to the camera. "He was full of energy and was happy. I was like, 'Oh my god, I got my son back.'"
